Self Reflection

1. I think that I am at a P+, because so far I have been keeping up with all my interviews and research checks, and every week, about twice a week, I am working on my service learning and I have more opportunities to be working on my Independent Component as well, since many of the things we work on within my service learning can tie in with the Independent Component. Also, besides the meetings, whenever I see something that ties in with psychology or with the certain presentation we're working on I can take detailed notes and use them for service learning. I'm also doing continuous research in order to come up with lessons and presentations to do within service learning.

2. One thing that I think I have done well on is simply finding and following through with my service learning, because of the fact that a few others still don't even have a set place or person to do their service learning with, and we have weekly meetings to work on lessons that we will present to younger children.

3. I would like to improve on learning more methods of how to successfully communicate with some one who is having problems so that I can help them solve whatever the problem may be. For example, in Peer Mediation, I would like to become a great mediator so that what I learn now can help me in the future.

Science Fair Proposal

1. If a teenager trying to memorize dictionary definitions is subject to a high level of background noise, then their retention rate will be low.

2. Dependent- number of questions correct
    Independent- background noise (decibels)
    Control- teenagers
      - type of background noise

3. My science experiment deals with memory, which is a big part of psychology which attempts to see how well a person can store information under certain circumstances. Also, since I am mainly focusing on child and family psychology the age range will help me know how much a student can remember when in a loud environment.

4. I will need 3 lists of 20 random words and their definitions (this vocabulary list will be at a 12th grade reading level), a decibel meter (Ms. Melogno has one I can borrow), a timer, and speakers. A total of 22 participants will take three tests, each one of the three sets of random words. The first in a silent room, the second in a semi-noisy room, and the third in a noisy room.
I will get the 12th grade vocabulary list from the California Department of Education.
The participants will have 5 minutes to look at 20 vocabulary words and their definitions. Once time is up he/she will take a test that lists words, but not their definitions; they must fill in the definitions. Once I have collected this data, I will use statistics to analyze the significance of my results.

What I've Learned So Far

1. So far, what I've learned is different ways of approaching and talking to a person that might be having problems and are emotionally unstable, and being able to help them a bit more than I normally would've been able to. I also now know the forms of therapy a child may go through, whether through regular therapy, or if it's in a form of play or music. I have also learned how to differentiate between the different types of psychological Needs a person might need.

2.

3. The article that helped me know the different forms of therapy for a child is called: "What Does a Child Psychologist Do?" and the link is http://www.wisegeek.com/what-does-a-child-psychologist-do.htm
the article stated that since younger children have more trouble analyzing problems, it is necessary to use different techniques to get through to them. Therefore, I now know more ways approaching children in order to talk to them, and not only does this apply to children, but a few of these techniques may also apply to people other than young children.

Independent Component 1 Plan Approval

1. I plan on helping out at Golden Springs, and once I get more experience by working in my elective which is Peer Mediation, start working with the children there as well.

2. This plan should meet the 30 hours work requirement because it will take planning to actually get started on helping, and that planning time will be counted into the hours needed. Also I plan on going to Golden Springs as many times as I can, plus the already scheduled plan.

3. My independent component relates to my EQ because by working close with the children and talking with someone that knows about psychology when it comes to being around students daily. Also simply just being able to observe the correct ways to communicate with a student that's maybe having a hard day will help me get a better understanding of will help someone become a more successful psychologist.

Defining the Essential Question

1. What is most important when becoming a successful psychologist?
2. Successful-meaning having a stable career, while also being able to connect and help the patients.
3. A few answers are,

  • Knowing the most current changes and information within psychology.
  • Having a good income regularly
  • Having the right connections when starting out as a psychologist.
4. My most important source So Far would be the article Family Psychology Careers and Degrees, this author doesn't show the author but the site that had it is, Advance in Psychology. This article is important because it gives me information about the training that is necessary to do, a psychologists' salary, what will need to be done once someone has their Ph.D. and is starting their career, basically it gives me a variety of information that is important to know.

Second Interview Question Follow Up

6. Where did you complete your education in psychology? And are you currently taking any classes in order to keep up with new psychological methods? If so, can you describe those classes and the new changes in psychology?

Presentation Reflection

1. My first interview helped me because before the interview I didn't know much of the history of psychology before Sigmund Freuds' time. During the interview we talked about the people who actually helped make psychology what it is today, and what each person did to make it possible. For example I learned about Wilhelm Wundt and the great impact he made on psychology.

2. I would say that one thing that stood out was that I actually used my visual as part of my presentation, I referred back to it throughout the presentation, whereas others just had their visual up there and it wasn't part of their presentation.

3. I would say that the most challenging thing to do was to actually figure out what specific information to present on about our topics. This was some what challenging because for those of us that have a general topic we have alot more information to choose from and it could be hard deciding on the more important facts.

  3. Then I'll start on the person who started Psychology and explain more about him, also tell everyone about other things that led up to what is now psychology
  4. Show everyone a picture of that people that I've mentioned.
  5. Ask if anyone has a question so far or they have any concerns.
  6. Continue talking a bit more on the history and show the final pictures.
  7. Ask if there's any final questions.
Check for Understanding:
I will be asking everyone in the beginning if there's anything they already know about the history of psychology. Also I'll be asking whether they have any questions during the presentation and afterwards as well.
Visual:
I will be using a board that will have pictures of the people that I'll be mentioning during my presentation.

Interview Check

I will be interviewing a psychologist because they will have all the answers I need since they already have experience and they've gone through everything a person needs to go through inorder to become a psychologist, also because there wouldn't be anyone else that will be as helpful as a psychologist.

A few other questions that I'll be asking the psychologist is:
a.) In order to become a psychologist, what classes are necessary, or helpful, to take when starting out?
b.) How much does your work affect your personal life?
c.) Are you available to your patients 24/7? Either by email or by phone calls?

Blog #1

What is your topic? Why?
My topic is psychology, I chose this topic because this is one area that I wish to study once I get in to college and see if this would be a possible career for me. I also chose psychology because I will gain more knowledge as to why people in general act the way they do and why certain events in their past change their behavior.

What do you hope to accomplish after studying this topic all year?
By gaining more knowledge and by doing the service learning I hope to be able to help many people if I do end up with this career, and also I'll have people I can go to if I ever have any questions about the career in the future.
